VISUAL Diary

An attempt to subvert social media and stay in touch with those around me. Remember when Instagram was for sharing photos?

High as a Kite

This is another one of my attempts at a minimal photograph. I was out with Margrét enjoying the rare blue skies and flying our kite. Inspired by the fact that there wasn't a cloud in the sky and how the string was waning as it rose up to hold the kite on earth, I held the string to the lens so that it would lead directly from the edge of the photograph up to the kite. The way it sags was just a lucky factor in how the kite was flying above. I am a big fan of the way the blue is darker in the top right corner than it is in the bottom left corner, creating a cobalt gradient.

Sailors

This was taken on the walk home from work at about 19:30 last week as the sun was in a really nice and low spot in the sky creating all sorts of great long shadows as I walked. I took about four shots of some really boring subjects before this one. Finally I got to within a good distance of this group of sailors walking towards the west side of town and tried to snap it so that the leading lines on the right were in good proportion to the sailors on the left of the frame. I didn't want to get too close before taking it because I wanted those shadows to play into the photograph.

Rainbow Road

The skaters of Reykjavík have all been wearing this same uniform lately. That hat style may as well signify a gang they are in. But one thing is for sure, they are all way too good at skating for a bunch of kids that live in a city where rain is the norm. To avoid him looking as I shot this I faked shooting the road (basically pretending to be a tourist) to get the candid of this guy as he was ripping towards me at a good clip. I kind of got lucky that I still had my ISO so high from my shoot yesterday so it bumped my shutter and F-stop up and I got a crisp image.

Visual Diary: An Explanation

I recently ditched my iPhone in favor of a Nokia 3310. With this comes the freedom to get away from some social media that was feeling more like an advertising platform than a sharing platform as of late. Bye bye Instagram.  But the question remains: how do I, as a photographer, continue to share some choice photos that might not be representative of my professional work?

The answer, it seems, is to return to something that I was actively pursuing from 2006-2017 over at kingoden.blogspot.com.  So, in that spirit, but updated a little for the times I live in now, I give you this space.

The photographs here are going to be an attempt to go a little more in depth than an average Instagram post. I want to talk a bit about my process, what the photo represents, and why I took it the way I did. Hopefully, the results will be satisfying to you and I, alike.
